When Should You Replace Your Double Glazing?
Double glazing doesn't last forever. Here's how to tell when it's time for new windows — and when a simple glass unit replacement might be all you need.
Double glazing has transformed the comfort and energy efficiency of homes across the UK, but even the best windows don't last forever. If your windows are 15-20 years old, you might be wondering whether it's time for a replacement.
Signs your double glazing needs replacing
Condensation between the panes: If you can see misting or moisture between the two layers of glass, the seal has failed. This means the insulating gas has escaped and the unit is no longer performing properly.
Draughts around the frames: If you can feel cold air coming in around your window frames, the seals may have deteriorated or the frames themselves may have warped.
Difficulty opening and closing: Windows that stick, jam, or won't stay open are not just annoying — they can be a security risk and indicate that the frames have distorted.
Excessive outside noise: If you're hearing more traffic or neighbourhood noise than you used to, your windows may no longer be providing effective sound insulation.
Higher energy bills: Old, inefficient windows allow more heat to escape, making your heating system work harder and costing you more.
When glass replacement is enough
If your frames are in good condition but the sealed units have failed (misted up), you may only need the glass replacing. This is significantly cheaper than full window replacement and can restore both the appearance and insulating performance of your windows.
When full replacement is the better option
If your frames are warped, discoloured, damaged, or more than 20 years old, a full replacement is usually the better long-term investment. Modern windows offer significantly better energy efficiency, security, and noise reduction than those installed even 10-15 years ago.
